Staying warm

Welcome to this seasonal newsletter with bits & pieces of news about our library-centre.

“More than a place to borrow books”

When most of Staffordshire’s libraries, including Blythe Bridge, moved over from county-council control to a volunteer-led, community-managed system a few years ago, it was seen as something of an experiment.
Well, it seems it was a very successful experiment, according to newly published figures. For example: physical book loans are still going surprisingly strong in the county: this past year saw 1.5 million loans in 2022/23.

More than books: computers and group-sessions too!

What’s more, libraries’ decisions to expand and become ‘community-hubs’ have worked out well. As well as developing information-advice systems on their computers, libraries like Blythe do a lot of in-house ‘well-being’ work (see our What’s On for details).
As the spokesperson for Staffs County said: “.. our libraries have been far more than a place to borrow books.”

These figures even show the positive effect libraries have on the local economy: a branch library typically provides £1 million in value annually, by bringing in visitors who then visit the local shops.

Donate for Xmas

One success that the report mentions is that of the ‘Donate IT’ programme, whereby people donate their old laptops, phones, tablets etc, for use by folks who can’t afford one.
So if you get new IT for Xmas, don’t throw the old stuff away, but bring it in here to the library – and we’ll pass it on to the right people!

Warm Space

Like a coffee? Just ask…

Blythe Centre has been designated a ‘Warm Space’.
If you’re feeling chilly at home, or just want to mix in with other folks, you’re free just to drop in to the centre when we’re open and sit for as long as you like. Some people bring knitting, some read magazines from off the journals-rack (or bring their own), some play board games with friends, some write letters, and a lot bring their phones/laptops in and use the free wi-fi. It’s up to you.
There are plenty of tables and chairs – please ask if there isn’t one immediately available.

A nice addition is that the hot-drinks service is back! Though the vending machine has now gone, the staff will make whatever hot drink you want at £1 per cup, with bottled water at 50p. There are even snacks, from 75p to 25p.

Xmassy exercises

If you get up in the morning feeling weary and stiff, why not try our chair-based exercise sessions?
There’s a special one this month, which will have a Christmas theme and seasonal music. We have a feeling that some people may even burst into song! (See our What’s On for details)
It really is amazing how much better one feels as a result.

Not forgetting…

And … a Very Merry Christmas to one and all!
