Welcome to long nights!

One of the few (perhaps the only!) good things about the chilly & dark months of the year is that they can be relieved – and enjoyed – by snuggling up with a good book.
But getting back into reading after the heady times of the summer can be hard, which is why we’ve come up with Quick Reads.

Quick Reads are brilliant, short, new books written by best-selling authors – perfect for anyone who wants a fast and satisfying read. So they are ideal for those wanting to get back into the reading-for-pleasure habit.
Some top authors are on the Quick Reads roster – including Roddy Doyle, Alexander McCall Smith, Anne Cleeves, Street Cat Bob and Andy McNab. Check out the Quick Reads shelf in the library!

The full list of Quick Reads can be seen on the https://readingagency.org.uk/adults/quick-guides/quick-reads/ webpage – you can even make a reservation for your favourite one at the library counter.

Best of (Scots) luck

We wish all the best to a great friend of the centre, Debbi Silcock, who upped sticks over the summer, and is now living in Scotland.
Debbi’s passion is crafts: she not only was artist-in-residence here, but was one of the inspirations behind the successful Blythe Centre Creative Group;and her holiday crafts sessions for kids were also very inventive. Just a few years ago she picked up a prestigious commendation in the Moorlands Volunteer of The Year awards.
One of the ‘treasures’ of the centre is the lovely hand-made book she created to celebrate the Lampshades in The Library project (click here for details).

Debbi (right) with a smile on her face…

It was always a joy to see Debbi’s smiling face around the place!
So… best of luck in your new home Debbi…

Simple fundraising

It’s a constant struggle to carry on raising funds to keep the library-centre afloat. Although the county council maintain the building, the project is deemed a local-community initiative and so we have to pay all the running costs.
As you’ll have read (see last month’s bulletin) one new way we’re now asking supporters to help is to nominate us as their ‘cause’ if they join the Moorlands Community Lottery.

However, simple fundraising works too.
On November 25th, we have a craft fayre, and sellers can take a big table at just £8. And, if you’re buying (perhaps looking for a Xmas bargain), please come along and have a look at the goodies on offer.
Also, we still need donations of your books, for use on the book sales section in the lobby. (They need to be in first-class condition though). Book sales are not a huge source of income, but they do keep the wolf from the door!

On the sale shelves at the moment, you’ll find some crackers, including a biography of Diana Ross and a marvellous account of the thrilling 2005 ‘Freddie Flintoff Test Series’. Both are great reads – and very cheap!

Finally…

Last word though must have us remember Sue Molloy. She was a respected volunteer & friend here, who died last month.
It was very sad news; and the centre was closed as a mark of respect on Tuesday 10th October, the day of her funeral.
She will be missed.
